Meningitis : Yes, bacterial meningitis is the most common cause of deafness in children. Viral meningitis usually has no long term effects, except certain viruses such as for example mumps that can cause meningitis/encephalitis and deafness

Sometimes: Hearing loss is an occasional complication of meningitis or the toxic effect of medications used to treat it. Your increased sensitivity to sound may have nothing to do with the meningitis.
