Fairly quickly: Bone marrow needs iron to make red blood cells. When the bone marrow is empty of iron it's termed iron deficiency. If left uncorrected, eventually leads to iron deficiency anemia. Symptoms of fatigue, irritability, headache and desire to eat ice may occur before anemia develops but are mostly noticed once one becomes anemic. Symptoms respond in less than a week. Anemia normalizes by 6-8 weeks.
