Calcium compound: Calcium acetate can be used in kidney disease to bind to phosphate to lower blood phosphate levels. Side effects of this treatment include upset stomach. Interestingly, it is used as a food additive, where it acts as a stabilizer, buffer and sequestrant, usually in candy products. It also binds Fluoride in water, neutralizing it.
