Hard to say: It's not that uncommon for "bruises" to just pop up out of nowhere, particularly if you take things like aspirin, other nonsteroidal antiinflammatories(like ibuprofen) or fish oil: all things that can "thin" the blood. Usually you don't have to seek an eval unless the bruise keeps enlarging, you notice other bruises appearing, or other bleeding like nosebleeds, blood in urine or stool or from gums

I am so sorry: My feeling is that when a bruise such as you describe appears for no reason it represents a broken vain in your leg. The bruise will change colors as it heals. You should let your doctor know about it.
