Difficult to say: As it depends on the type of cancer and the involvement of the cancer at the "margins" or borders of the excision. Unfortunately without more information, it's hard to say exactly what the next steps of management are. To be able to provide more information, the biopsy results will be incredibly important.

Hopefully: Sounds like it was a relatively small lesion, that's good. The only one who can answer that question, however, is his Surgeon.
