Hard to second guess: Physicians who are well acquainted with their patients and histories, will sometimes prescribe a medication without an exam although this is not always ideal. If you have a long standing relationship with this physician, and trust him/her, then follow recommendations. Otherwise, establish yourself with someone you trust, or talk to your current doctor about your concerns.

Allergies?: Given his known dust mite allergy do you have dust mite covers for the mattress and pillows? Is it possible he has additional environmental allergies? Try an oral antihistamine or consider a steroidal nasal spray for symptoms. Consider another appt with allergist to look for other potential avoidable allergy

Congestion: Based on your description he sounds like he has allergic rhinitis and NOT an infection. Is he running a high fever, having sinus or ear pain or a sore throat??? I would try some children's strength OTC antihistamines first. Good luck
