Not enough informati: The details are important. Where are your boils? How bad were your friend's? Was he treated? Chlorhexadine washing will sharply reduce staph on the skin. Mupirocin ointment will reduce staph in the nose. Drainage of the boils will facilitate healing. Long term SMZ/TMP or minocycline or doxycycline can stop this problem.
