As long as it needs: People put into medically induced comas are left in them as long as they need maximal brain rest. Depending on the reason, this may be hours or it can be weeks - in rare cases even longer. They are "taken out" by gradually reducing the medications used to induce the coma. This too can take hours, days or longer. They just don't stop them and the person "pops up" awake, so you really can't be there
