How long does it take jaundice to clear in a newborn?

Depends: At least a 3rd of infants will develop some jaundice as baby develops more capacity to metabolize bilirubin that mom previously removed through the placenta. These usually peak in the first week and clear over the next week .In some breast fed babies it may linger for 3 weeks or so. However, there are other things that aggravate jaundice and these can require testing and treatment to prevent harm

Jaundice newborn: Fullterm babys generally clear bilirubin or jaundice within the 1st week. Preterm infants may take up to 10-14 days. Some breastfed babies will continue to have some jaundice during the time they are breastfed. This is not dangerous. The type of bilirubin may help to sort out the cause. Mostly it is physiological and a normal process. All the best. Followup with your MD if prolonged.
