A member asked:

What do you suggest if my newborn has bilirubin which is causing jaundice?

Common problem: Depending upon the levels, your baby may need treatment with a blue spectrum phototherapy light. This is a common problem related to the newborn liver learning to take care of the bilirubin molecule. It usually peaks at 3-5 days of life and then diminishes, although it can last longer if you are breastfeeding. Discuss the levels with your pediatrician. Good luck.

Jaundice: It depends upon the age of the newborn, whether the baby is breastfed or not, what type of bilirubin is elevated (direct or indirect) and what the level is. Neonatal jaundice can be a very common occurrence or one that signifies other things. Please clarify.
