Its concentration is tightly governed and regulated between 22 and 28 meq/liter. A value of 32 indicates an excess. Why it is 32 is important. The kidney is responsible, for sure, though the kidney need not act alone. Hormone signals such as aldosterone excess can drive this change. Lung retention of carbon dioxide also can. Ask doc.
