A member asked:

My doctor prescribed flagyl and ciproflozacin for irritable bowel syndrome. i would just like to understand the benefits and why both are often used.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

IBS,or other reason?: Typically, the combination of antibiotics metronidazole (Flagyl) & ciprofloxacin for bowel reasons is for infection like diverticulitis. Each specializes in fighting different types of bacteria; metronidazole for bacteria that do not require oxygen to live, and ciprofloxacin for the ones that do. Flagyl can be used for small bowel bacterial overgrowth (can have IBS-like symptoms in some people).
