See primary care doc: Black stool can occur for various reasons, including from Pepto Bismal or iron supplements, or bleeding from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. When from the GI tract (eg, bleeding ulcer), the stool tends to be sticky & foul smelling. When having stomach pain & black stool, it is important to get seen ASAP. The source of bleeding needs to be found and stopped.
