Uncommon: Retinal detachments are uncommon eye problems. There are 3 types and the risk factors are different for each. The most common type is associated with a tear in the retina and these occur most often in very near-sighted people.

Mainly myopia: The single biggest risk factor for developing a retinal detachment is myopia (nearsightedness), esp. if the glasses prescription is stronger than -6.00 diopter (high myopia). Additional risk factors include family history of retinal detachment, history of trauma to an eye, history of eye surgery (intraocular like cataract, vitrectomy etc.)
