No cure yet!: Once infected, the virus remains in the body for life. Recurrent infections (outbreaks) may occur from time to time, especially in times when the immune system is stressed and weakened. Outbreaks become less severe and more sporadic with time, and some people will have no symptoms but will still be contagious. Antivirals can reduce viral shedding and alleviate the severity of symptomatic episodes.

A few days?: It can take a few days for it to calm down. There's no way to fully get rid of herpes all together. The medicines are only temporary. If you get frequent recurrences, you can take the same medicine at lower doses to suppress it. Talk to your doctor about that.
