Traumatic phlebitis: It is not uncommon for the vein to be inflamed after being punctured for a blood draw. It can take 3-4 weeks to resolve. If the area gets warmer or redder or more painful or you get a fever, it may have become infected and you need to see a doctor. In the meantime, anti-inflammatory creams like Voltaren (diclofenac) gel might help it improve faster.
