A member asked:

Are there any tests for anxiety? or can a dr. simply question you and make a diagnosis with no tests? found it odd that i wasn't tested for anxiety.

No test: There is no specific test for anxiety. There are specific diagnostic criteria that you must meet to have the diagnosis. There are different 'types" of anxiety disorders as well. Usually during the office visit, the answers to the questions and his/her observations of your behavior, the doctor can make the diagnosis based on the criteria.

Doctor questionaire: typically it's something your primary doctor would ask you during your routine physical exam. If not, and you are concerned, you should bring it up. There is no lab or imaging test for it. It's a series of questions that would lead to the possible diagnosis.

Testing 4 Anxiety: There are several questionnaires that can be given for anxiety (e.g., Beck Anxiety Inventory) and some standardized psychological tests that look at anxiety. However, it is not necessary to give a test to diagnose anxiety. A standard psychological diagnostic interview is sufficient. Additionally, many drs. will diagnose & treat based solely on a few questions asked.
