Not likely: It could be a bad sprain. Even if there was a fracture in the wrist, many times, no surgery is needed. But, if the x-ray was negative, it's unlikely to be anything but a sprain. This will improve over several days. In the meantime, you can try a wrist splint or ACE wrap. These are available at most pharmacies.
