Good question: Ringing in the ears is a very common complaint seen in an ENT office. If the sound is symmetrical in both ears, it is probably of no concern. If it only on one side, a complete ear workup is mandatory. If it is the result of excessive noise exposure, it is usually not correctable. The why in your question is that the most modern concept is a synchronous electrical discharge from the brain.
