Different things: There are several different things that can result in loss of cerebral volume or atrophy in the pediatric age group. One group of problems are referred to as LEUKOencephalopathies. These are caused by genetic errors & are inherited. Infections, strokes, & trauma are other reasons for brain atrophy Long term effects for white matter illnesses are not great compared to the other causes which vary.
