Different things: There are several different things that can result in loss of cerebral volume or atrophy in the pediatric age group. One group of problems are referred to as LEUKOencephalopathies. These are caused by genetic errors & are inherited. Infections, strokes, & trauma are other reasons for brain atrophy Long term effects for white matter illnesses are not great compared to the other causes which vary.

Agree with Dr. S. : While obtaining evaluations by pediatric subspecialists in neurology, genetics, ophthalmology, audiology, neuropsychology & developmental/behavioral pediatrics, share medical information with her school. Your public school district will perform psychoeducational testing & develop an Individualized Educational Plan for her with your input under the category of " Other Health Impairment."
