Paradoxical: Respiratory health is better w/out smoking. But I have heard of this paradox. I don't know a sure explanation, but there may be one. Change may be difficult for your body to adjust to. One thing I know - smoker's inhale-hold-full exhale (mouth) - is very good for you - lowers BP. When we stop smoking, if we stop that pattern, we suffer anxiety. It can be part of it. Try doing it 'as if' smoking.

Quitting smoking: is the single most important thing that you can do for your health. Your symptoms are common initially when stopping smoking. It will improve soon. Ask your doctor about breathing exercises. Congratulations!

Because of Smoking,: not quitting per se, more likely. Smoking shuts down the mucociliary escalator, see: http://goo.gl/WcSJGV for intro., which powerfully drives both bronchitis & emphysema, the two core components of Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease. At the same time, for a few, smoking seems to inhibit the asthma bronchospasm response & a bronchodilator dilator will likely help ↓ the symptoms & ↑ rate of recovery.
