They are related: Plasmacytoma is a localized form of multiple myeloma. When we look and search deeply, many such patients already have some evidence of systemic disease(Multiple myeloma). But some cases are truly localized to one spot in which case they can be cured with local Radiotherapy(and may be bale to avoid taking chemotherapy, which is standard treatment for disseminated disease.

Plasmacytoma: Having 2 plasmacytomas in long bones is considered as one of the major criteria for myeloma. She needs complete staging workup which might have been done already and should include cbc, chemistry panel, immunoglobulin levels. Spep, ife. 24 hour urine for protein, serum light chain assay, beta 2 micro globulin and a bone marrow biopsy aspirate and biopsy with cytogenetic a and fish panel.

Plasma cell cancer: In our bone marrow and blood we have plasma cells (help make antibodies). These cells can proliferate and become cancerous, thus a plasmacytoma. If it is in one location doctors refer to this as a plasmacytoma. However if widespread involvement the disease is in the spectrum of multiple myeloma.

Plasmacytoma: Treatment will depend on whether this is just one ( solitary ) or multiple, and where is the location ( bone ? Vs extramedullary?) in general- plasmacytoma is treated with local treatment i.E radiation therapy. Surgery can be done sometime if lesion is small. Bisphosphonates if it is located in the bone. Need to make sure this is not multiple myeloma. See your oncologist and discuss in detail.

Plasmacytoma is: A collection of monoclonal plasma cells, either in a bone or in soft tisues. Its biopsy or removal can be confirmed microscopically and immunohistocheically by a pathologst. While it may presage mutiple myeloma, a systemic disease, some remain localized and are treated with fractionated radiotherapy.

What do you suggest if my mom has plasmacytoma in the right left(upper tibia).can it be multiple myaloma?

Yes: A complete work up should be done to evaluate if there are cancer cells outside of the tibia (blood tests, urine tests, bone marrow biopsy, skeletal survey) as she may have multiple myeloma. This is an important distinction because treatment recommendations change. Often treatment decisions are made by the surgeon, medical oncologist, and radiation oncologist together.
