Yes: You can damage ribs with any trauma. Hence rib fractures. Lungs can be damaged many ways from trauma to smoking and inhalation of particles. Need to protect your lungs as much as possible. Other causes can include infectious one that will damage your lungs.

Lung Function Tests: Normal value for pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are determined by age, gender, height, weight and ethnicity. There is no specific correction for chest circumference. If the chest circumference if affected by a disease (such as pectus excavatum - sunken chest), there would a restrictive pattern on PFTs with reduced vital capacity and total lung capacity.
