A number of causes: One of the more common causes of nausea on awakening is eating before bedtime, especially if you have gastro-esophageal reflux (GERD). GERD can cause nausea on it's own, without eating at bedtime. Other causes include: post-nasal drip, gastroparesis (seen in Diabetic patients), medication side effects e.g. ibuprofen and other NSAIDS, psychiatric conditions, etc etc.

Nausea: Since you have had this symptom for quite a while with no development of other symptoms, it may be normal for you. You can try having something light to eat before bedtime, like cereal or a banana. Your symptoms just may be due to hunger. Avoid acidic or spicy foods before bedtime. Sleep with your head elevated on several pillows as this could be acid reflux.

Not likely serious: Nausea that does not lead to vomiting, and is not associated with abdominal pain or severe headache, and is only intermittent, is probably not serious. Some people feel nauseated when their blood sugar is on the low side in the morning, and need something gentle on the stomach to raise blood sugar, and then the nausea subsides. NSAIDs can cause nausea, as can acid reflux and anxiety. Many causes.
