Episiotomy: Episiotomy is performed in most deliveries to avoid a tear in the vaginal wall. An incision is far better than a tear which can lead to a larger scar etc. In most cases, numbing is not used as the skin is stretched too tight. If you have an epidural, that would be the best option. good luck with the delivery.

Yes and yes: Hi. First of all, I'm not a gyn, so you may get far more definitive answers from them. Of course, depending on anatomy and circumstances, sometimes cesarian is required. But yes, generally an episiotomy is done to prevent tearing, and I hope you're opting for an epidural anesthesia, in which case you will be numbed. Congratulations and good luck!
