Chronic thrush: Its difficult to offer diagnosis without at least pictures of the condition, but it sound like he may have thrush along with "recurring cold sores" may suggest immunodeficiency. I would recommend that your son be examined by a doctor for physical exam including possible swab of "stuff" and serology.

Tongue: The white on the sides of the tongue may be from clenching and local irritation of the sides of the tongue. See the dentist to check it out. There is no specific cure for cold sores but see the doctor to get a check up to look for other causes
