Difficult to know: insomnia can occur with depression, worry, chronic pain, acute pain, congestive heart failure, caffeine or as a medication side effect. It can occur if there is reversal of the normal sleep wake cycle (taking naps in the daytime then up at night) Sometimes confusional states can lead to insomnia ( eg, urinary track infection in someone with pre-existing brain dysfunction or a degenerative state)
