A healthy, typically: developing 5- month old can sleep 10-11 hours at night without feeds & nap 3-4 hours total/day. At a consistent bedtime. read, cuddle, feed, wipe out her mouth with a soft cloth. Put her in her crib in her own room drowsy, but awake, to learn to self-calm to sleep without bottle or pacifier. Ignore night-crying now to avoid its being a habit by 6 mos. See HealthyChildren.org for ignoring methods.

Awake: A five month old baby needs at least 12-14 hours of sleep a day including two naps of about an hour or two each. It would be helpful to know what is keeping your baby awake. Is she happy when awake, crying, seeming to be uncomfortable, seeming to be tired but unable to sleep? How does she handle mealtimes? Does she have normal growth and development so far? Discuss with her ped soon.
