Co-contraction: Simultaneous contraction of antagonist muscles is known as co-contraction. This creates a stabilizing or dampening effect on the involved limb. For example, when holding a drill in space and attempting to control how deep it plunges, your biceps and triceps co-contract around your shoulder and elbow. In some conditions (eg brachial plexus injuries) pathologic co-contraction can limit function.
