Blood in sputum: There is concern if > 1-2 teaspoons of blood as opposed to blood streaks , A cold irritates the bronchioles and the force of the cough can cause minor capillary bleeding. Similarly in the nose the congestion, sneeze force and ironically dryness cause capillary breakage and bleeding. Vasoline on the inside of nose at night ,to moisturize.Try a cough supressant , may need antibiotic.Talk to doc

IF you continue to occasionally cough up blood AFTER your cold is over you should discuss this with a physician, especially if you are a tobacco smoker, as it can be a sign of cancer.
