Senokot (senna): Fruits, fluids, ambulation, Metamucil all safe if lactating. Avoid constipation it will alleviate the hemorrhoids which are pretty much universal after giving birth.

Fluids: Usually it is a result of inadequate fluids and not drinking extra fluids to compensate for breast feeding fluid losses. Be sure to avoid caffeine and alcohol as these will contribut to constipation.

Constipation: High fiber diet including brown rice, avocados, sweet potatoes,strawberries oats barley, lentils, kale at every meal . Lots of fluid including juices and water ,exercise. Avoid straining. Discuss this and other options with your ob.

Fluids and Fiber: The most common causes of constipation in pregnancy are decrease fluid intake and pre-natal vitamins. The safest way to treat is by increasing fluids and your fiber intake. If needed, most fiber laxatives are safe ie bran powder, psyllium. Stool softeners are safe as well. Miralax (polyethylene glycol) is better than Lactulose and both are class C for pregnancy and usually well tolerated. Check with your physician.
