Sad to say: There is really only one medication FDA approved for ALS and that has an impact on survival: riluzole. All the other medications are used to address symptoms/manifestations of the disease itself.

Not many: Sole FDA approved in US is Riluzole, and some pts feel that gabapentin and memantine make them feel better due to glutamate inhibition. But the Riluzole merely delays need for tracheostomy and does NOT improve strength. Sorry, but not much else available here.

ALS treatment: Normally people with ALS are treated with the medicine Riluzole 50 mg twice per day. They may also be treated with assistive devices for speaking, swallowing, walking, or breathing at times.
