Benign uterine tumor: Fibroids are growths, usually ball shaped, that are made of uterine muscle. To doctors, a tumor is an abnormal growth of tissue and does not necessarily mean cancer. Fibroids are benign, or non cancerous. They are more dense than normal uterine muscle and can cause pain, pressure, bladder or bowel symptoms, painful sex, and/or heavy, painful menstrual periods.

Benign tumors: Fibroids are benign smooth muscle tumors of the uterus. The cause of fibroids is not known, however they tend to run in families and appear to respond to hormone levels. If they do not cause any symptoms, they can be left alone. However, they commonly cause heavy or irregular periods, pelvic heaviness, or pain.
