Med side effects?: Electrolyte problem like potassium or calcium or magnesium, muscle denervation, muscle strain from new exercise program or increased intensity are a few causes. If it continues, please see your primary care physician for an exam and tests. Xanax (alprazolam) can cause muscle spasms as a side effect. as can lovastatin. If either changed or started recently, that might be your answer. Check urine myoglobin ,CPK.
