Please see below.: Hiccups are caused by irritation of the phrenic nerve, which then stimulates the diaphragm (the layer of muscle separating the chest cavity from the abdomen) to contract. This causes you to inhale sharply. If any of the inhaled air 'goes down the wrong pipe, ' it leads to burping when the air goes back up again.
