Sprain vs fracture: If able to bear weight without significant pain, likely only sprained. Rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE) therapy is the recommended treatment course for sprains/strains. Compression via a sturdy ACE wrap or via a snug elastic slide-on ankle brace is usually sufficient; just be sure that you still have good circulation in toes. If unable to bear weight, concern for fracture: seek X-ray

Possible fracture: Rolling your ankle with a cracking sound may represent a fracture. If it is painful and particularly if you can't weight bear, see a doctor and get an XR. Keep it elevated and apply cold packs.
