See below: An actual broken back (fracture) of the back is unusual. It can happen in severe trauma like high speed motor vehicle or motorcycle accidents. In older people, it can happen due to osteoporosis which is thinning of the bone. Symptoms of a broken vertebrae are usually intense pain at the site of the fracture. If the bone fragments back into the spinal cord or nerves, there will be other symptoms.

Pain: Pain is the most common symptom, as well as poor ambulation, and possible neurologic issues. Some back fractures can present with minimal or no symptoms, such as stress fractures of the low back (spondylolysis). Treatment depends on the symptoms and type of fracture.
