Cold sore: Usually if it was an allergy you would have swelling of the lip rather than a sore. Sometimes its due to food that is spicy, sometimes local trauma from liquid or food that is hot in temperature. Due to the unpredictability of cold sores they can pop up at amy time. There are many OTC ointments to treat them

No: Cold sore is caused by virus; herpes virus, a virus from same family of chicken pox, genital herpes and shingles. Cold sore usually go away without treatment. But if very painful, antiviral treatment may help reduce the duration of symptoms if started within 24 hrs
