As they'd like it: If it's severe - they need professional help - call for it if so. But even then - what you can offer till then is simply 'being there'. Ask for their agreement on your presence very gently. Accept and follow their lead on non-verbal or short phrases. Just sitting still together may be fine. If you need to say something informative, make it clear, calm, gentle and simple. No stirring of flames, ok?
