Complex, dermatomes: refers to the usual distribution of sensory nerve fibers extending from the spinal cord out to the body. If sensations are c/w a particular dermatome distribution, yet basis for sensation is not apparent within this distribution, the inference is that the basis for sensation is not peripheral in the innervated area but instead near the nerve roots, spinal cord, sensory cells themselves.
