What does it mean if the cervix isn't closed at 6 weeks pregnant?

On exam?: If the cervix appears somewhat open on exam, that may not mean anything this early in pregnancy. This early in pregnancy, miscarriage is always a possibility but that is usually diagnosed with vaginal bleeding. As long as you are not bleeding, you can be confident all is well at this point.

Closed cervix: You cannot tell by just looking at a cervix if it is open or closed. The exocervix, or outer cervix can be open but the inner cervix, the endocervix usually is closed and plugged by mucus at 6 weeks of pregnancy. This is especially true in women who have had children before. Confirm this with your health care provider.
