A member asked:

After waking up every morning i spit out phlegm. this is not involuntary or with a cough, i just do it. is it normal to have phlegm every morning?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Normal: It is normal to have phlegm in the morning. Often, it is related to reflux that occurs at night. Try to avoid eating meals late at night, or eating right before you go to bed. Avoid foods that increase reflux risk, and if the symptoms persist you can try trials of acid reducing medication. If they worsen, see and ENT for evaluation.
