Vit D dose: It is best to have a blood test for vit d and cacium levels to guide you on the proper dose of vit D. Discuss this with your physician who can order the appropriate tests and advise you. Excessive doses of vit D can raise the blood calcium levels to high leading to kidney stones and other problems. Daily vit D doses can range from 400 units to 7500 units daily depending on test results.

Vitamin D is safe: Vitamin D is an important vitamin, and difficult to obtain via diet only. Moderate (~15 min/day) sun exposure helps, but not always possible, While it is safe to take, even in high does (5000iu/day or 50,000iu 1-2x/week), it may not be necessary to take such high doses for a prolonged period; rarely u can develop toxic levels (>100ng/dl). I suggest u get 25-OH vitamin D test to assess ur level.
