Cancer is tough: There is not one cancer but many. Every type is a separate issue with particular characteristics. Many cancers are easily cureable. Many cancers are generally benign and we don't bother to treat. Others we don't bother to treat because we don't have any idea how. Others are best prevented, like lung cancer and getting people to stop smoking. It is not one disease, but many.

There isn't one: cancers occur from quite a lot of different cells. The trick is to get rid of the cancer and not the normal cells and each cancer cell has different specific treatments. These range in susceptibility due to faster growth (chemotherapy and radiation),, specific growth hormone use (breast cancer), specific protein makers (lymphoma) and others I am applying for grants for.

Surgery: There are many types of cancers. Hence different cures for different cancers and degrees of cancer. Surgery is effective for some. Immunotherapy, treatments that spur the immune system to fight off cancer like it does other illnesses is the promising approach now.
