Palpitations: Heart palpitations or "skipped beats" may cause shortness of breath in those with reduced cardiac reserve but are typically harmless when infrequent. If you are having frequent symptoms, you may have an arrhythmia (irregular heart beat) that comes and goes. This can be detected on an ECG (EKG) or by Holter monitor if it occurs infrequently. See your doctor if you are concerned.

Either ways: In your case, having skipped along with shortness of breath could be a subtle sign of an underlying rhythm disturbance. True it could be nothing, but I think it is most prudent to get it checked out. As recommended before, EKG, Holter monitoring are the ways to do it.
