Prednisone: Prednisone should cover it honestly, if you want something else to see if it will help, take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) 50mg every six hours as needed as well. Follow up with your doctor next week regardless.

Symptomatic relief: This means try several things and settle in with one that works. Most patients find relief with one of the following: benadryl (diphenhydramine) for itching, calamine lotion, oatmeal baths or steroids in severe cases. Steroids are great for redness and swelling but take at least 12 hours to work well. Hang in there and try several of the options above.

Common: This is a common problem when amoxicillin is prescribed for a viral infection especially mono. You may try topical agents such as Gold Bond anti-itch or TriCalm. Antihistamine does not work well in this condition but if the problem is severe, your doctor may consider putting you on a short course of prednisone.
