Trauma or other bugs: cold sores are from herpes viruses. Trauma is the most common cause for localized lip swelling due to either clenching/ grinding activity or from external forces. Yeast will cause lesions at the lip commisures. Bacterial infections potentially can also settle in the lips causing swelling and visual sores.

Plugged gland: small secretory glands are plentiful in the lips and can expand as cysts that can become infected. Colored swellings, or swellings that are getting larger should definitely be discussed with your practitioner.
