Until it is cured: Lyme disease is a chronic infection. It can affect any organ system in the body.It does not go away on its own, so symptoms will last your entire life, often progressively spreading and worsening, unless it is effectively treated. The longer it is present before starting treatment the longer it can take to treat effectively & some authorities feel it may be impossible to fully eradicate in some cases.

Many factors : Depends on a lot of things. Untreated, lyme disease can spread to many organs over weeks & months, yet still not show symptoms. Or, a person could get very ill within days of the tick bite. Untreated, lyme disease does not go away by itself, even if the symptoms get better. Complete treatment is necessary, for weeks if just after tick bite, and months if treatment delayed.
