Is hamster bite harmful?

Puncture wound: The long sharp teeth of hamsters can create quite a painful puncture wound. Puncture wounds are very prone to infection. Rarely, the teeth can make it to the bone of a finger in small children, further increasing the risk. Local wound care (washing with soap and water several times per day) is necessary, and treatment with antibiotics possible.

Not usually: Most hamster bites require thorough cleaning initially. Make sure your tetanus is up to date. Your physician will likely place you on an antibiotic to prevent infection. If your hamster has been unwell it may be more complicated. So,e hamsters have been known to carry rarer infections. If you get sick, get checked and let your doctor know about the bite.

Rare if pet: wash the affected area with warm water and antibacterial soap. Apply neosporin or bacitracin ointment and bandaid and check daily for changes suggestive of infection-red, tender and swelling/discharge.
