Rib joint swelling: In the front of your chest is a big bone, the sternum. Attached to it from both sides are the anterior (or front part) of your first through sixth rib. Usually, rib numbers 2,3,4, and maybe 5, can get sore at the sternal to rib joint. Kinda like arthritis. Fancy word...costochondritis. Usually resolves well with 3-7 days of NSAIDs (like motrin, advil, ibuprofen, naproxen or aleve)

Inflammation in ribs: Costochondritis is irritation or inflammation of the joint between the ribs and the breastbone (yes, there are joints there). It can feel similar to a heart attack (heavy, dull ache or pain) but usually lasts longer, is worse with movement or deep breathing, and can be provoked by pushing on the ribs in the area. Fortunately it can be treated with anti-inflammatory med. Heating pad also helps.

Irritation: The cartilage- chondritis and ribs- costal are connected at front. Inflammation of the junction can cause pain and mimic heart pain? Local trauma, squeeze, stretch, may cause irritation.
